Even if I only play for a few minutes, my time is rarely wasted.Real treasure can't stay buried for long.Īre you guys interested in digging up a mother lode of charm, engaging spelunking and precious fun? Then make sure to grab your pickaxe and come to El Machino - it's where all the steampunk/western action is these days! A band of reviewers has been going at it ever since Steamworld Dig 2 was released last week and they're having a blast. Or I might sprint through the levels as fast as possible to access secret areas that only stay open for a certain amount of time, and hide treasure and powerful upgrades. In one instance I might scour every inch of the levels looking for cells and blueprints (which add new items and mutations to the shop), which will make me more powerful in the next life. There's a narrative here that's never really done justice, but there's a lovely attention to detail in the design (like the hanging bottles above the starting area that show visually how many permanent upgrades you've unlocked) and the foreboding atmosphere and slick animation of each area communicates the themes nicely.Įven though I've played through the first few opening levels countless times, the genius of the game's many intertwining systems is that I can choose to go after different goals in each run. Every stage seems slotted together from pieces that you learn to recognise over time, but the combination of which can still trip you up.

The game strikes a near-perfect balance between what remains the same and what is totally randomised each time you die. This odd fellow will take your cells, and over time you'll have enough to make permanent changes to the world. But there are certain elements of persistence. You'll start back in the prison cell, and all the level layouts, weapons and the location of enemies and treasures will be different. Of course no matter how well you're doing you will die at some point, and all that stuff will disappear. You won't always get the gear you want, but there's usually a style you can adapt that makes perfect use of what you find.

You might find an upgrade scroll that augments the power of certain weapons, or a sweet turret that can mow through whole crowds of enemies at a time. Maybe you have an ice spell to freeze enemies and a massive hammer to end them, or a flaming bow and a broadsword that just happens to do massive damage to monsters that are already on fire.

Our headless hero is pretty nimble, with a double-jump and a quick dodge at his disposal, but he isn't particularly hardy so you need to learn how to safely deal damage with your chosen weapons.Ĭombat is brutal and satisfying, as you quickly settle into a rhythm depending on what you have to work with.

You can only carry two main weapons at a time - there are melee weapons, bows and shields to choose from - plus two "abilities" like grenades or traps. From there you explore the massive, sprawling maze of dungeons fighting monsters, finding weapons and collecting treasure as you hunt for the passageway to the next level. Each life begins when a clump of green slime enters and reanimates your headless corpse in the depths of a filthy prison.
